Give to Local Nature Lab
Girls are underrepresented in the New York City community of young birders. The Lady Birds aims to address the gap in access and participation. Girls will learn how to keep a nature journal, to observe and identify birds, to create biological drawings and photograph birds, to find a patch and stay safe while birding outdoors, to use eBird, Merlin, and other community science tools, to identify native plants and the locally evolved relationships between plants and insects. These activities will be led by experts in urban forestry, ornithology, entomology, and the arts. There will be numerous opportunities for unstructured exploration as well as time for the girls to showcase their knowledge and skills.
We were asked to change our program name by a UK-based organization because it was "too similar and covered by [...] trade mark."
Girls ages 8 to 15.
The program will begin in January 2026, and we will meet monthly until October 2026. Each participant will receive a small stipend.
Update: the 2026 program is enrolled. Please complete the sign-up form to receive information about the first meeting and permission forms.
Private support is provided by City Parks Foundation and Partnerships for Parks through the NYC Green Fund.
